I have to say post a weekend of what we all expected would be devastating to the snow I was absolutely blown away today.
Looking out the window this morning I could see we had fared pretty well snowpack wise, officially we have a very decent 120cm average cover (more than this time last year). What I really didn’t expect was the quality of both the base and the fresh snow on top. And I can honestly say it was not just because I was expecting a whole lot worse.
As the day went on more snow fell and the temps hovered around -1 degrees. At 1pm the temp started to drop and by 3pm it was -3 degrees with patches of sun mixed with very heavy snow flurries. I am talking 2-3cm in 15-20 minutes type flurries of super quality snow. Between 1pm and 2pm I did these shots with Falls media gun Chris Hocking and local boarder Kieran McLaughlin. We were all surprised at the quality of the snow, its texture was what I like to call philly cheese. Not super light powder but just a pleasure to ride.
At 2pm it started to clear as it rapidly cooled off. I grabbed my pack and skins and swung by Patrol base to check we had the ok to run Backcountry tours in the morning. I was going to tour out and have a quick look, but Patrol had a much better plan – a couple of laps of the area to ensure that all was good. So with Patrolers Mike Reed and patroler Fred we headed to Mt Mckay for a look. Someone’s karma sure was hot, as we arrived it cleared and with 15cm of super nice dry snow we had one of the best runs I have ever had in Oz down McKay’s south face. I kid you not, it was perfect.
That pretty much sums up the snow conditions currently, a more amazing comeback than Leighton Hewitt beating Nedal in a french Open final after being down 2 sets and match point.
