Snow Journal 22 December | Mammoth Mountain

California’s Mammoth Mountain is the world’s snowiest place this week, buried under a 5m – and counting – snow-dousing.

Thanks to a weather phenomenon caused by a cold air vortex and precipitation travelling northwards from Hawaii the heavens opened over the California Sierra Mountains on Friday 17 December and they have remained open ever since, dropping a simply ridiculous load of snow on Mammoth Mountain resort.

Friday saw the snowiest single 24 hours, clocking in at just under 1m for the day. a further 274cm fell between Saturday morning, 18 December and Wednesday morning, 22 December.

The snow is expected to continue up to and through the Christmas weekend and as of Wednesday Mammoth has a 502cm snow base, the largest recorded snow base of any resort in the world.

Unfortunately all that snow causes its problems. Flights and road travel into Mammoth have been problematic and much of the upper mountain is closed due to avalanche risks; the resort’s ski patrol has gone into overdrive to secure the area so skiers and boarders can get themselves buried in all the fresh powder.
