Monday 25 June
New Zealand is sandwiched between a deep low just south of the country and a big high over South Australia. These two features inch their way eastwards over the coming week, maintaining a cold southwest flow over Aotearoa with several embedded fronts or troughs, all bringing a healthy dumping of snow to as low as 300m at the bottom of the South and 700m on Ruapehu.

Monday 25 June:
Snow showers throughout the day, some could be heavy on Ruapehu. However, it will be pretty sweet up Mt Hutt where there will only be a bit of high cloud. More substantial snowfall over the South Island, including Mt Hutt tonight and overnight as a trough crosses over, yippee! Strong SW winds, but gale westerlies on Ruapehu.
Tuesday 26 June:
Snow showers again today, with some heavy falls on Ruapehu around the middle of the day. Mt Hutt will clear around dawn, but cloud will return again for the afternoon. Strong SW winds, gale force on Ruapehu where it’ll turn southerly around midday.
Wednesday 27 June:
Any remaining snow showers for Queenstown and Ruapehu ski fields should clear early in the morning. Fine spells elsewhere. Strong S-SW winds, gradually easing up Mt Hutt.
Thursday 28 June:
Cloud increasing on Queenstown and Ruapehu ski fields with snow flurries from afternoon. Mostly fine elsewhere. S-SW winds.
The big high should finally move over New Zealand during Friday and Saturday, providing a nice window for skiing in the sunshine. A trough looks set to cross the country during Sunday and early Monday, which is likely followed by a W-SW flow.
