South Island Detailed Forecast

The Mountainwatch Detailed Forecast is provided by our resident meteorology sensei "The Grasshopper". The South Island analysis is issued around 7am every morning (maybe later on weekends) and is intended to provide an additional human element to the automated forecast data provided above. Sometimes we won't agree exactly with the model data - but if we ever call something significantly different we'll do our best to explain why.

Conditions Summary:
The southeasterlies with snow have arrived. 15-20cm at Mt Hutt already, and a few cm in Otago too. Oh how it warms my hopper heart.

Synoptic Outlook:
The snow is set to continue all day right down to 1000m, with Canterbury getting the most of it. The forecasts have revised the amounts UP again and another 15-25cm is possible today. Hip hopper hooray for Mt Hutt! Tomorrow we’ll see things clearing, early in the day for Otago, later for Canterbury.

Tuesday the high pressure is firmly in charge and we should get a couple of sweet mid-week days.

Sunday 20 August:
Southeasterlies and another 15-25cm of snow down is possible to 1000m in Canterbury. On/off cloud and snow showers to Otago.

Monday 21 August:
Snow showers clearing. Light southerlies.

Tuesday 22 August:
Ding ding. Bluebird.

Wednesday 23 August:
Some cloud getting over Otago but another beaut day in Canterbury.

Extended Outlook:
On Thursday we have a front coming on from the west but it’s not clear if this will muster up enough strength to bring much of anything across to the ski fields. Going into next weekend things look mostly fine or cloudy. Let’s see if any of the fronts next week have the energy to push this high off and bring us some more snow.
