Tony "Harro" Harrington has been at the leading edge of the big wave tow-in surf movement and extreme ski scene since their beginnings and is the only photographer to master both these sports at the highest level.
One of many incredible spreads in the new book Defining Moments, captured around the globe by one of our countries greatest action sports photographers. You can't miss this one.
Harro's photos have graced magazine covers of leading surf and snow publications internationally for more than 25 years, appeared on stamps, posters and towering billboards. Now, after painstakingly choosing from thousands of images he has created a special collection of photographs that represent 'defining moments' in an extraordinary career.
Defining Moments is a rich, large-format 120 page book that barely scratches the surface of Harrington's deep archive of images created during decades of chasing monster swells and swirling snowstorms around the globe.
Internationally recognised faces such as Laird Hamilton, Justin Allport, Ian Walsh, Jamie Mitchell and Jamie Sterling are a few of the surf stars riding the 60ft waves at Jaws, Ghost Trees, Mavericks and never-before surfed waves off the rugged coastline of South Australia. These images are complemented by photographs of staggering first descents down soaring peaks in Alaska and Greenland carved by Jeremy Jones, Jeremy Nobis, Andrea Binning and the world's leading big mountain snowsports athletes.
The images in Defining Moments are centred around the realms of extreme of surf and snow that Harro has made his life's work and passion but there are other powerful stories and moments documented in its pages. An eye-opening journey to West Darfur in Sudan documenting the results of a genocide create poignant insights and we also share an intimate window as Harro honours the passing of sporting legends Andy Irons, Shane McConkey, Trevor Peterson, Gilles Voirol and Jamie Pierre.
This is a book for lovers of surf and snow. It is also makes a stirring read for anyone interested in the passion and drive of those who push the limits, who strive and seek adventure and face their fears. Harro is the embodiment of this spirit and in his book generously shares his beautiful images and reflects on moments that have shaped both his photographs and his life.
This beautiful large-format book is supported by a FUJIFILM Photography Exhibition that will tour with the launch of the book from May 2012 and will also accompany the Carlton Dry Snow Collective movie tour up the east coast of Australia this winter.
