Mount Aspiring

Mount Aspiring / Tititea is New Zealand's highest mountain outside the Aoraki/Mount Cook region. Set within Otago's Mount Aspiring National Park, it has a height of 3,033 metres. Maori named it Tititea, which translates as "Glistening Peak." A formidable icon on the skyline of the Southern Alps, Mt Aspiring is sometimes referred to as the "Matterhorn of the south" after it's shape when viewed from the Dart River. Sitting about 30 km west of Lake Wanaka it is located just east of the main divide. This spot is the confluence of the Bonar, Volta and Therma glaciers that all drain toward the West coast at Haast and Jackson Bay. Just like nearby Mt Cook, there is no ski infrastructure at Mt Aspiring making it accessible only by Mountaineering and Helicopter. The region is accessed via the same road that leads up to the Treble Cone Ski Area via the West Matukituki Valley. This hike leads to a series of mountain huts that are managed by the New Zealand Department of Conservation. The Mt Aspiring National Park is the playground of serious Alpinists and the nearby Aspiring Helicopters.
