Saturday September 17 was undisputedly one of the greatest gatherings for Australian snowboarding. Not only did the weekend mark the 30th anniversary of Snowboarding at Thredbo Resort it also marked the official announcement and presentation of Tight Lines 2016.
With the voting wrapped up as of Thursday September 15 the much-anticipated results were released in front of a boisterous crowd who gathered on the Bistro deck. Snowboarding pioneers and legends sat right alongside the future generation of shredders.
It would be only fitting to crown young buck Angus Waddington as the winner of the “Peoples Choice” award. Angus dominated online voting with a tally of 3,838 votes. A solid result that backed up his powerful and technical run. The crowd continued to get vocal and the deck erupted with praise when Jye Kearney’s came to be announced as the winner of the “Tightest Line” Industry Award. Jye’s undiluted enthusiasm for the win was apparent and the mood was set for an afternoon and night of celebration.
There was no crowd more fitting for the presentation than the one that gathered on the Bistro deck. Pictured here amongst the winners; Angus and Jye are fellow competitors, snowboarding legends and the one and only Timmy Vlandis who’s pointing front and centre. Image:: Aedan O’Donnell
In its second running year, Tight Lines is an invite-only online video competition, offering twelve of Australia’s best riders one day each to film their perfect non-stop park lap for a share of $5,000 in prize money.
Each invited rider had one day to plan and film their best run or “tightest line” at the Anton’s Park in Thredbo. Once all runs were filmed, each rider’s video was available to view on the Tight Lines Mountainwatch site and each entrant was eligible for two awards: The People’s Choice and The Tightest Line Industry Award, each worth $2,500 in cash.
The People’s Choice Award was then voted on by the general public and the Tightest Line Industry Award was voted on by 20 of the industry’s most influential over a two-week viewing period. The runs put down by riders this year proves that the standard of riding here on Australian soil is nothing short of world class. Both of the winning runs where in good company with the competing riders who put limb on the line for a shot at the win.
The twelve invited riders were; Jack Spence, Beau Fisher, Rocco Rachiele, Jye Kearney, Ryan Tiene, Troy Sturrock, Jared Elston, Joel Cantle, Angus Waddington, Raph Louis, Billy Hayman and Josh Vagne.
