Australian Forecast, July 24th – NW winds strengthen before Rain & High-Level Snow on Thursday, Fine Friday, then a Top-Up of Snow this Weekend

Strong NW winds will become even stronger ahead of a front that will bring rain to the Aussie Alps as it crosses on Thursday. Snow levels will stick to the tops in NSW but could approach mid-levels in Victoria if we’re lucky. Skies will then clear up for a nice day on Friday.
A cold front will bring a refreshing top-up of snow on Saturday. Models are a little out of sync regarding the timing and amount of snowfall, so I’ll wait until Friday’s forecast before giving more details.
Wednesday July 24th
Gusty NW winds rising to gale in exposed places. There’ll be a little high cloud overhead, and some lower-level clouds will turn up in Victoria in the afternoon.
Thursday July 25th
Rain spreads eastwards over Victoria during the morning, reaching NSW around midday. It’ll build into heavier falls before clearing Victoria in the evening and NSW at night. Snow could fall as low as 1600-1700m in Victoria but will mostly stay above 1800m in NSW. Gale-severe gale NW winds again will likely limit operations.
Friday July 26th
Any morning cloud in Victoria will clear for a nice, sunny day in the Aussie Alps with NW winds.
Saturday July 27th
Cloud builds over the Aussie Alps ahead of a cold front that will bring a period of snowfall. The snow will briefly start out wet on the lower slopes before gusty NW winds change to a colder SW. About 5-10cm is expected, but we could score up to 15cm if we’re lucky.
Extended Forecast
Any leftover snowfall will dry up Sunday, July 28th . However, some more light snow showers could turn up on Monday th3 29th as another surge of SW winds comes through. Chilly temperatures during this time should have the snow machines running for long periods. High pressure then moves in on Tuesday, the 30th, to settle and clear things up for several days of fair-weather skiing.
