Conditions aren’t looking pretty for the next week or two as a series of frontal systems caught up in a strong westerly flow bring wet and windy weather to the Aussie Alps. Our snowpack will take a bit of a hammering, but cooler temps will see snow falling about the tops (above 1800m) tonight through Thursday.

Friday will be the nicest of the bunch, thanks to a weak ridge of high pressure keeping things under control. However, northwest winds will intensify this weekend as another couple of fronts bring more showers of rain.

Wednesday August 21st

It is a day for the keenest, with rain, drizzle and low visibility at times, especially in Victoria, while strong northwesterlies blow a gale in exposed areas of New South Wales during the morning. Snow will fall above 1800m tonight.

Thursday August 22nd

Rain and drizzle, falling as snow to around 1800m, will clear Victoria during the afternoon and New South Wales in the evening. Strong northwesterlies persist.

Friday August 23rd

Brisk northwest winds will bring grey, murky conditions to Victoria with drizzle at times, while New South Wales will be partially cloudy.

Saturday  August 24th

Rain showers gradually clear as gale northwesterlies start to decrease.

Extended Forecast

Strong west-to-northwest winds will continue to blow over the Aussie Alps on Sunday and through next week, likely reaching eye-watering speeds around mid-week. We’ll also see rain showers, which will fall as snow up high at times after cooler air arrives on Monday. However, our best bet for snow is during the latter half of next week when models expect an even colder airmass will arrive. Keep your fingers crossed!

That’s all from me today, folks. The next forecast is Friday. See you then, and have a great couple of days.
