La Grave, What it’s Like to Ski the Angriest Mountain You’ve Ever Seen – Video
Mountainwatch | Video
La Grave is one of those infamous ski resort destinations whispered in Aprés bars the world over. Most people haven’t heard of it, but those that have will nod with the kind of recognition that only comes with having stared up at the towering behemoth from the bottom of the Téléphérique while being scared out of your brains.
For ski legend Doug Coombs, this combination made for the perfect home. He lived there for a number of years before tragically passing away in a fall while skiing with Chad Vanderham, in the Couloir de Polichinelle. Vanderham fell first, and in the process of trying to rescue him, Coombs slipped to his death. He was 48 years old. In memory of his legacy, Doug’s friends skiied to the spot of the accident on the ten-year anniversary of his passing – April 3, 2016 – and placed a plaque on the rock.
This episode of A Skier’s Journey chronicles the culture of La Grave, and is a stark reminder that the place can offer unparralleled beauty as well as tragedy.
