PHOTO JOURNAL – Early season at Alta Lake
In a few weeks this lake will be covered in snow and frozen over completely, you can see why they use it to train for Antarctica Image:: Vaughan Brookfield

Over in Queenstown, The Remarkables are actually not quite open for business. The official opening day isn’t until Saturday 22 June. This however, doesn’t mean that local Queenstown photographer Vaughan Brookfield and friends are going to hang out by the lake. Last week, 10 days before opening, the boys made the most of the excellent early season snow and went out for a hike to Alta Lake.
Lake Alta is only a short hike in from the bottom lift. It is below the famous Remarkables chutes. The lake in the shots is usually frozen over, but with the large early dumps we got to see it still pretty much unfrozen and with good snow around. Come winter time, the lake will become completely frozen, the Antarctica New Zealand Dive team even use it for pre deployment training.
