Tony Harrington’s “Defining Moments” – The Ultimate Coffee Table Book

Defining Moments, not your average coffee table book.

Defining Moments, the work of Mountainwatch senior photographer Tony Harrington, may be the ultimate coffee table book for skiers, snowboarders and surfers. Harro is one of the most prolific action sports photographers and has been shooting snow and surf for over 40 years, always on the road chasing storms, swells and adventure.

In typical Harro-mode he has hit the road to promote the book racking up 1000s of ks, currently crisscrossing the US on a road trip that has taken him from Tahoe to Jackson to Aspen then back to Tahoe. If you’re looking for a Christmas present for someone who loves the snow and the surf, Defining Moments, is the perfect choice.

From Harro:

It’s never easy being the small person in a big world of publishing and business. You need to work a lot harder, drive a road a lot further and be a lot more personal in the approach to get the word out – especially in the case with my recently released “Defining Moments” book.

After recent book shows in Australia, I’ve been touring around the U.S. this past few weeks, state-to-state, resort-to-resort presenting slide show and talks where the reality of what has been created has become defining in itself.

At first people don’t really get what a 1352-page coffee table book is, maybe because nothing like it has published before. Maybe because a big publishing house didn’t produce it.

One of Harro’s many covers.

I could have made a book that had a few ‘big’ names in the surf and snow industry. However, by publishing Defining Moments independently I was able to honour the spirit of the project, which has always been to share all the key moments in life that have been ‘defining’ for me.  That includes plenty of well-known skiers, snowboarders and surfers, but also plenty of  underground and grassroots people I’ve connected with along the 40+ years on a never ending journey immersed in surf and snow culture.

As Lily Riter, Ski Journal magazine’s editor wrote in a feature on the book this week exclaimed: “Books about surf and snow are special. This one especially so. It’s not a coffee table book that will go out of style next year. It’s something designed to live in a ski cabin, office or living room for decades to come.”
