VIDEO – The Transfer Photo Battle

June 27th, 2011

The idea behind the Transfer Photo Battle is brilliant in its simplicity. Australia Vs New Zealand. Get the best riders and photographers from each nation, build them custom features at an iconic resort in their homeland, give them a week of free reign to get creative and run wild. Now you can sit back and enjoy the fruits of their labour.

The inaugural Transfer Photo Battle is a 26 page feature in the Transfer Photo Book, which hits shelves on Monday June 27. The Photo Battle was the brainchild of Transfer Editor Russell Holt. Each team submits a photo essay, and the photos are judged by Transfer’s readers. There is no specific criteria, no guidelines, no rules. As a reader, you choose what you like. This format led the teams to get creative with their environment to bring you something a little different. The videos here record the time that each team spent at their nominated resort producing their photo essay. The photos are the real determinant of who wins. So get your hands on a Photo Book!

Team Australia had three days of classic Australian springtime conditions at Perisher Resort. The sun was out, the vibes were good and Transfer Senior Photographer Jake McBride was on hand to document it all. For Australia, this event marks the first significant commitment to snowboarding photography by a resort, namely Perisher. The resort and the park crew were happy to build a huge kicker in Sun Valley and an assortment of gaps over iconic Australia trees and rocks. When asked about their time at the event, each member of Team Australia begins with how willing and helpful Perisher and their park crew were. The video you see here gives you a glimpse of what Australian snowboarding is capable of.

New Zealand
Nick ‘Pooch’ Poohachoff | Bevan Hall | Liam Ryan | Jay Walsh | Abby Lockhart
Photography by Vaughan Brookfield | Snow Park

The initial brief for the Photo Battle included that each team should try to incorporate their national identity and heritage into the photo shoot. The Kiwi boys definitely outdid the Aussies in that regard. With a typical New Zealand sense of humour, the team brought a bunch of farmers and their sheep into the resort. As usual, Snow Park was more than happy to drop everything and engage all its energy into creating something unique. The only slight disadvantage that the Kiwis had is that the weather didn’t really come to the party. When you check out the video, you’ll realise that didn’t slow them down much at all.

At the end of the day, YOU DECIDE. Who do you think deserves to be crowned victor in the first Transfer Photo Battle?
