Freak Snow Storm Hammers NZ North Island

October 7th, 2009

The North Island of New Zealand has been pummeled with a huge winter-like snowstorm that dropped nearly one metre of snow up high on the mountains at Ruapehu and across the resorts of Whakapappa and Turoa.

The storm crossed the North Island on Saturday night and through Sunday also dropping snow down to low elevations covering towns like Ohakune and closing major highways including the Bruce, which caused chaos for unsuspecting motorists many who were trapped for hours.

What was frustrating for those driving in the valley, made for pure stoke for skiers and snowboarders as what has been called the storm of the season by staff at Whakapapa rolled through.

Both mountains opened today for skiing.
