Heathrow Fire Destroys Canadian Ski Team Equipment

The Canadian Alpine ski team has revealed it lost equipment worth around £100,000 in last week’s warehouse fire at Heathrow Airport.

The Canadian team was using the airport to house skis and timing devices prior to shipping the equipment to New Zealand for a training camp at Coronet Peak later this month.

The equipment was destroyed when fire spread through a warehouse belonging to Servisair, a provider of aviation ground services.

Canadian skiing chief Gary Allan confirmed the team will nevertheless forge ahead with the camp and have already begun the process of replacing the lost equipment.

“This has come as quite a shock to us but we’ve decided to push ahead with this important training camp,” said Allan.
“Literally everything that we had for the camp, all the skis, electronic timing, communications and computer equipment has been lost. So at this point we are starting from scratch and working our way toward what is needed to make this training camp happen.”

Much of the lost equipment will be covered by insurance but that process is likely to come too late for the upcoming training camp.

“Obviously what we are mobilising now, and require the most, is to replace the equipment and supplies that we lost as quickly as possible so that our skiers can focus on training,” Allan continued.
“The co-operation that we have received from our many suppliers and partners has helped a lot, but there’s a long way to go.”
