Ben Murphy is an Australian skier living on Vancouver Island in Canada. One of our leading freeskiers when the sport kicked into gear 10 years ago, Ben’s competitive career morphed into coaching which took him to Canada. However he’s also a super keen red-hot surfer and when he discovered that Vancouver island has great waves as well as the epic snow and terrain of Mount Washington he’d found his home.

Here is his take on one weekend early this season:

Winter Is here!

Winter is fully locked in and the snow has been falling. Over 300cm of snow on the ground and there has been some epic powder days already marked on the 2012/13 calendar…

Mt Washington is known for its record snow depth winters – last year finished with a base of over over 8 m – and this season looking to be another cracker! Over the Christmas and New Year break Brady Clark (photographer) and myself had been keeping a eye on the weather forecast to plan a few days up the mountain and do some shooting.

I had a few days skiing up the mountain before this last storm and the temps were cold and the snow was dry; Really good for so early in the season and I knew we had to get up there and shoot some of the goods.

These pics were taken over a weekend. The first day we shot the weather was a grey and flat light so we had to be careful where we went and couldn’t venture too far out into the back country due to visibility. The next day we woke up to a sick sun rise and were blessed with a blue bird sky.

Game On!
