Snow is Forecast for High Country Festival in Mansfield

 There is set to be a dump of snow in the Mansfield Botanical Gardens on Sat 31 October! A rail jam ‘spring shred’ event is coming to Mansfield thanks to a delivery of snow from Mt Buller.

Skiers and snowboarders are invited to show off their skills in the pop-up terrain park featuring a thrilling ramp in run and a collection of boxes and rails usually only found up on the mountain during winter.

Buller Ski Lifts Visitor Experience and Event Manager Nick Reeves is excited to bring a taste of winter to Mansfield in spring, “When the season wrapped up in early September, the mountain operations team carefully salvaged the snow from Bourke Street and have kept it under wraps with the plan to do something cool and fun with it for the community.”

“We decided to bring snow to the valley as Mt Buller’s contribution to the High Country Festival and it’s been wonderful to work closely with Mansfield Council and the festival to provide something unexpected for spectators and an opportunity for young people to shred on snow in the heart of town.”

“An interesting fact,” Reeves added “is that some of this snow was made back in April or May when the snow factories first started producing cover for the start of the season. The snow we make is super chilled and it’s resilient stuff. It’s been sitting deep on Bourke Street for months as skiers have slid over it and now it’s getting a final hurrah in Mansfield before melting into the gardens.”

The event will be held in a jam format with participants able to get in multiple runs on the course to dial in their tricks during a 2.5 hour event window. Judges will award prizes for skill and effort and take crowd reaction into the selection of winners.

The rail jam gets underway in the botanical gardens from 12.30pm following the High Country Festival grand parade through town. Spectators are encouraged to gather in the gardens at the end of the parade to watch all the action and cheer on the riders who will be enjoying the snow park until 3.30pm.

The Mansfield Rail Jam event is a collaboration between Buller Ski Lifts, Alpine Resorts Victoria and Mansfield Shire with Altitude Mt Buller and Burton Snowboards generously contributing towards the pool of prizes up for grabs on the day. The top competitors are in with a chance to take home cash or a new Burton snowboard.
