It’s being reported plans have been submitted for approval of a brand new gondola development that would link Frankton, located next to Queenstown Airport, with the popular NZSki owned resort, The Remarkables.

The submission was made by Queenstown property developer and investment company Porter Group. Chairman Alastair Porter told the media that the project would see the completion of the largest gondola in Australasia and would represent a “significant” investment in regional tourism infrastructure.

While the kickbacks to local tourism will reach far and wide – likely resulting in an increase to both summer and winter visits plus new hotel developments – the gondola would also make The Remarkables incredibly accessible to skiers who might otherwise be intimidated by the access road.

Of course, none of this will go ahead until the project obtains all necessary approvals. This submission marks the first stage and further resource consent submissions will be made next year, with operations expected by 2019.
