After a rough middle of last week, we managed to come out with some snow, storm totals were around 20cm but after a wet and wild few days we still need a lot more. Right now, a high-pressure system is sitting right above the Aussie Alps bringing mild conditions and cold nights for the beginning of this week, which will be good for snowmaking.

This high-pressure will move into Bass Strait today before settling in the Tasman until a front approaches around Thursday. There is a massive difference between models in the pressure situation later in the week and fingers crossed we see nice amounts of snow all over the Alps.

The first of the two fronts approaching will run out of gas as it gets closer to Victoria but the second will be the one that hits Thursday hopefully bringing some late week snow. Source: Bureau of Meteorology (vandalised by the Grasshopper).

Monday June 28

Fog in the morning in both Victoria and NSW with a mostly sunny cold day once the fog clears. Low possibility of very light flurries in NSW.

Tuesday June 29

Similar story with early fog clearing into a sunny day. Winds slightly strengthening throughout in the day from the northeast.

Wednesday June 30

Medium possibility of snow above 1700m in NSW and high chance above 1600m in Victoria. Modest totals of around 5cm expected.

Extended Outlook

As I spoke about in today’s satellite image there are two fronts in line to move towards southern Australia. The second is the better of the two hitting Thursday. The model differences I mentioned are significant this week and we could see totals over the weekend of around 30cm or we could see no real significant snowfall. This disagreement between models is on the synoptic situation after Wednesday after the high in the Tasman moves southeast over New Zealand. Some models say Thursday/Friday will be the pick this week others say Sunday, but I think we’ll see light to moderate falls from Friday to Sunday. Check my next forecast on Wednesday for a better idea.
