Blue skies and fresh snow welcomed over 1300 people for the first day of the season at Coronet Peak today.

Christchurch resident Ben Yorsten made it three for three this year, scoring the coveted first on chair spot at Mt Hutt, The Remarkables and Coronet Peak. Jono Renwick also made the trip from Christchurch to be first in line, while locals Tony Russel, Kurt Wilson, Connor Fleming and Tom Forrest made up the remaining spots on the chairlift.

Coronet Peak Ski Area Manager Nigel Kerr said he was stoked to finally get the chairlifts spinning and see the excitement out there today.

“It was great seeing everyone up here today getting some laps in. Conditions are pretty good for early season, the snow is a real delight, dry and grippy. The next few days are looking bluebird so it’s a great time to come up to get that vertical in.”

Not only are the lifts running for the first time this season but the first Night Ski is also taking place from 4-9pm, so guests can enjoy some floodlit skiing or riding and après session with music. This weekend a special Saturday Night Ski Party featuring The Crown Rangers and Mountain Fun Day on Sunday will take place as part of the Welcome to Winter celebration.

Coronet Peak is open seven days a week with Night Ski every Wednesday and Friday night during July and August, and select Saturdays throughout the school holidays.
