Australian snowboarder and Freeride World Tour athlete, Michaela Davis-Meehan is gearing up to host a freeride women’s coaching program at Thredbo this August. The two-day ‘Ladies Discover Freeride Weekend’, in collaboration with Mountainwatch and The North Face will hit the slopes of Thredbo’s resort and backcountry from 14-15 August.

Michaela says the weekend will provide snowboarders with tips and tricks to put their best foot forward at the Thredbo Snow Series – Freeride event on August 16. However, she’s encouraging anyone with an interest in backcountry to get on board.

“While my journey onto the Freeride World Tour has been incredible, I’ve had to figure it out on my own. This created the concept of ‘Discover Freeride’, to give others a path into the wonderful world of freeriding whether it be just for fun or to compete in the Thredbo Snow Series Freeride event on August 16.

“This weekend is really for anyone that’s keen to push their riding, gain more courage and ultimately send it!” she says.

The first day of the weekend will be spent in bounds, exploring the features in the Bluff, a snow-gathering bowl just off Thredbo’s iconic Kosciuszko Chair. This area is renowned for its cornices, fun drop-offs and wind-blown powder and is the venue for the Thredbo Snow Series Freeride event. Michaela will be passing on her knowledge and experience gained from competing on the Freeride World Tour, covering everything the judges are looking for, from technique to jumps, control and fluidity.

The second day will see them hike out to Thredbo’s Signature Hill in the nearby backcountry where Michaela will coach them through riding more technical and challenging terrain. Just a 20-minute hike from the top of Karels T-bar, Signature’s 360-degree terrain has a bit of everything from open faces on the southside and steep technical chutes on the northwest side.

Michaela will also be there for the Freeride event, checking out the terrain and snow conditions on the day and providing riders with some final pointers before they compete.

The Ladies Discover Freeride Weekend is available to anyone looking to improve their freeride skills and experience backcountry boarding at a high intermediate, advanced or expert level.
