HOTHAM Photo POWDER Report… Are these Pics from Australia or Europe?

July 7th, 2011

Sam Leitch cranking a turn near Gotcha. The blue skies were back this morning after a night of heavy blizzard conditions. It was perfect.

With powder Chamonix would be proud of Hotham is doing its best impression of a French Alp resort this week thanks to a 98cm snow base and well over half a metre of snow in the past week.

In a matter of days the resort has gone from mmmmm, ok to hell yes! and by the weekend 100 per cent of the mountain will be open – more than a month earlier than in 2010.

Light snowfalls are expected into the weekend, but patches of blue skies like the ones seen today will make the coming days the kind we all dream about.

Hotham’s only miserable occupant. This guy was rambling about his iPhone. He lost it. In this very place, apparently. An application on the phone told him it was here. But he can’t seem to find it. It’s out of battery and there is too much snow. I didn’t have the heart to tell him he was standing on top of a buried table. Hopefully he found the iPhone. If you happen to find one out the front of Swindlers, have a heart and hand it in to the bar. Even if it is in spring.

Hotham, open for business!

Clearing the doorway at Swindlers this morning. It’s really not the best indicator of new snow depth due to the wind blowing a lot of the fresh snow off the balcony. But even so, at the other end of the scale, you can see how much has accumulated in the more exposed places at the top of the village.

…and landing. There are lots of very nice little pockets where fresh and wind blown snow have begun to fill in the terrain.
