Mt Buller hosted the National Pond Skimming Championships on Saturday afternoon attracting an enthusiastic crowd and close to 100 competitors for the inaugural event.

Presented by James Boag’s Draught, a star studded celebrity panel of judges was assembled with comedian Peter Helliar, ex AFL star Nathan Thompson and 2014 Winter Olympian Anton Grimus all pond side in the judges tent.

Competitors were judged on 3 different categories: Longest Skim, Style (best trick) and of course Best Costume, with the competition fierce in both the individual and group categories as the ‘Skimmers’ fought it out for more than $5000 worth of prizes.

Mt Buller local and Team Buller Riders (TBR) Coach Joey Corcoran took out the Open Title in a stunning retro themed ensemble and a front flip out of the pond, scoring a perfect score of 30 and the honour of being crowned the 2014 Australian Pond Skimming National Champion.

TBR coaches dominated the podium with Andrew Clark and James Phillips winning the Teams event, while Mt Buller Ambassador Jared Rodden took out first place in the Junior event.

Mt Buller has enjoyed an incredible snow season in 2014 and with the sun shining, Spring is always a fun filled time on the slopes. With such an excellent turnout, the National Pond Skimming Championships are sure to become a permanent fixture on the mountain in September.

General Manager of Buller Ski Lifts Laurie Blampied said today that the event was a huge success.

“This was truly one of the best events Mt Buller has ever hosted and it was terrific to see the local community come out in their droves to support the inaugural National Championships. Spring is always a great time to visit Mt Buller with plenty of sunshine, snow and great savings for guests and this event is yet another drawcard for the resort. Our focus has now already turned to the 2015 National Championships, which promise to be even bigger next year,” Blampied said.
