MOUNTAINWATCH – Welcome to our New Website

May 18th, 2011

Countdown to Winter | New Website

If you’ve dropped by Mountainwatch today you’ll be noticing a few changes – hopefully you’re thinking they’re for the better. So you know just what we’ve done, here’s a quick introduction to the new features and improved parts…

Forecasts

Our Opus. This is what makes them so good:

  • The world’s only interactive three-hourly spot forecasts. We’re giving you a picture of the temperature, snowfall, wind speed and freezing level for every three hours so you can see the weather trend throughout the day. Why do you want this? Well you can see when the wind will be strongest, the snow deepest and the air coldest. Plan you après accordingly.
  • We’ve taken out the spread of numbers and replaced them with a colourful, interactive graph so you can easily compare all the conditions. You can see the freezing level compared to the top and bottom lift elevations and how the wind speed relates to temperature.
  • The forecasts are still the only ones in Australia unique to each resort – we know Thredbo and Perisher have different conditions, we’re not lumping them together. They’re also still refreshed every 12 hours so all the data remains current.

The new forecasts

Top 10 Snow Forecasts

The biggest distraction on the web since facebook introduced ‘Friend’s Photo Albums’… If you’re anything like us you’ll be checking these every morning and every afternoon – they refresh at 2:30pm – and planning your weekends accordingly.

These lists sit pride of place on the homepage and they list resorts in order of forecast snow. There’s one for the next three days and one for the next seven days. You can choose to see the worldwide list or narrow it down to countries. Result – you’ll always know where it’s going to snow the most.

Transfer and Chillfactor sub-sites

Catering to the different interests of skiers and snowboarders the magazine sub-sites will be filled with editorial, video, photos and news specific to their sports.

Forecast Discussions

Now you can discuss all things weather and snow with other weather-nerds (yes, we know we are) on Mountainwatch. Our meteorologist and weather team will be joining in.

Coming soon – email snow reports and weekly newsletter
By winter these will be up and running. Snow report emails, sent on the days you want them and featuring the resorts you care about, and a weekly newsletter covering snow, events, news and the rest will take Mountainwatch to you.

We hope you enjoy it and we’d love to hear what you think – there’s a comments section at the bottom of this article – let us know!
