The 2011 World Heli Challenge kicks off on July 27th this year and will culminate in a red carpet, black and white attire Gala Awards night in downtown Wanaka on August 27th.

This year introduces a number of new elements including online judging of athletes runs by an esteemed global judging panel. Each athlete’s runs will be displayed online allowing everyone with a computer to check it out and vote for themselves who they believe had the winning runs.

The Pro Photographer and Filmer Shootout adds a whole new dimension to the event. Seven photographers and seven filmers will compete against each other to push technology and creativity to the limit.

Who wants to be the 2011 “World Heli Challenge Young Gun”?

Send us a photo or video of you skiing or snowboarding and the reason why you’d like to be the “2011 World Heli Challenge Young Gun” and compete alongside the likes of Travis Rice, Ted Davenport, Aline Bock, Ane Enderud and a cast of legends in the greatest freeride event in the world.

The chosen 12-14 year old skier and boarder will follow in the foot steps of Jossi Wells and Mitch Reeves who competed as “Young Guns” in previous events and the door will be opened wide to their future as a professional snow sports athlete.

The prize package will also include a discount to participate in the Junior World Heli Challenge Academy – a 1 and 2 week accredited training camp that involves coaching by World Heli Challenge athletes at Treble Cone, education in outdoor activities including back country safety, mountaineering, environmental studies and more.

The Junior World Heli Challenge Academy camps will run from July 18th to July 29th and will culminate in a helicopter accessed day with Southern Lakes Heli Ski where participants will test the skills that they’ve developed during the program.
