Snowy Mountains Trout Festival Report

November 4th, 2009

By Craig Daly
The Snowy mountains Trout festival kicked off last weekend. Several hundred fisho’s were greeted by hot summer like weather the first few days. The recent rains and snow melt greening the area filling the lakes and rivers bringing the fish on the bite. With the water warming to a balmy 19 degrees.

All methods of catching the elusive trout and salmon are employed. From bait fishing from the banks of the lakes, trolling lures, spinning, soft plastics and fly. Each one of the categories is being hotly contested for the prizes on offer.

As with all fisher folk every one seems to have the secret to success. I spoke with some folk in the know and the bait of choice is mudeyes, scrubbies (worms) and powerbait all catching fish. The boaties trolling yellow wing tassie devil lures had success.

The fly that is fishing well Morts Yabbie pattern also scored. Some of the fish weighed are Brown trout over 3kg salmon over 2kg and a rainbow 1.7kg.

The results to be finalized on Friday with winners in each category to be announced at Berridale at 2pm.
