Nikolai Schirmer’s Ultimate Freeride Training in the Austrian Alps. Video

This new video from Norwegian freeskier Nikolai Schirmer is the first of a number of “behind the scenes” episodes promoting his upcoming feature-length film, SKI – The Greatest Ski Tour of All Time, a 96-minute doco scheduled for a cinema release in Norway in January.

In this episode Nikolai and his regular riding partner Krister Kopala head to Austria in January 2024 to climb and ski some steep big mountain lines in quality snow. As Nikolai says, training for a big mountain skiing isn’t just about the gym, bike riding and long-distance runs – “You also have to ski a lot and that was the goal here in Austria.”

They are joined by Chamonix freeskier Virgile Didier, who absolutely rips and has qualified for the 2025 Freeride World Tour, and US freestyler Alex Hackel, who brings his terrain park and urban game to the Austrian Alps. The result is another excellent high-energy video with incredible POV footage and the usual stunning cinematography from Vetle Sevild.
