Thredbo, April 21, 2021: Framed by a brilliant orange morning sky, the Thredbo Community Bell stands proudly atop Australia’s Highest Lifted Point at 2037m above sea level. This is the captivating scene which will greet Thredbo’s winter guests as they receive their 2021 MyThredbo Card.

Taking centre-stage on the resort RFID card pass, which guests use to access Thredbo’s lifts, the mini masterpiece wasn’t created by a big-name artist (yet) but rather 12-year-old Jindabyne Central School student Marley Jacobsen.

Celebrating the Community Perspective

In its second consecutive year, the MyThredbo Card Art Competition gives budding Snowy Mountains artists from Jindabyne Central School and Snowy Mountains Grammar School the chance to showcase their work, and, their special relationship with the mountains.

Open to local school children from Kindergarten to Year 6, the winning piece takes prime position on the MyThredbo Card and gives visitors to Thredbo a window into the local mountain experience.  This year, competition entrants were invited to portray their ‘favourite thing about Thredbo’ with artist Brad Spalding looking for creativity, originality and colour.

Marley Jacobsen speaks of the day that inspired her winning entry. “We went up for a walk to the bell at Thredbo in early Autumn last year and I thought the view was pretty cool,” Marley said.

Her artwork was created using oil pastels, pencil and sharpies during her afternoon art class noting it was her favourite subject because you could “imagine and draw whatever you thought of.”

Marley said she was already looking forward to winter and is excited to get back on a snowboard. She will receive a winter season pass and a Thredbo prize pack for designing her prized artwork.

Historically, Thredbo has commissioned artists with a strong link to Thredbo. Past artists featured include two-time Archibald prize finalist Zoe Young, canvas board creator Imants Tillers and the internationally recognised Andrew ‘Grassi’ Kelaher. Former Thredbo Snow Sports School Director, Brad Spalding, was the inaugural artist with his distinctive series of raincoat-clad ‘sou-wester’ people (winner of the Thredbo Art Prize in 1995).

The shortlisted entries from this year’s competition will be displayed online and can be viewed here.
