Good news for Australian skiers and snowboarders today – and the New Zealand ski areas and the country’s tourism industry –  with New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Arden announcing that fully vaccinated Australians will be allowed back into the country from 11.59pm on April 12.

They will not have to isolate on arrival.

As well as being fully vaccinated travellers will need a negative PCR test prior to departure and a RAT test on arrival and then another after six days.

Initially the border opening with Australian was slated for July this year and the New Zealand tourism industry has been pressuring the government to bring forward to the date. Prior to the pandemic Australians made up 40% of international visitors to New Zealand, spending NZ$2.7b and the April opening is perfectly timed for Australian school holidays.

“Reopening in time for the upcoming Australian school holidays will help spur our economic recovery in the short term and is good news for the winter ski season,” Prime Minister Ardern said.

It certainly is good news and no doubt many Australians will be looking at a New Zealand snow holiday this year. If you are keen to cross the Tasman for a few turns this winter, head to Mountainwatch Travel and check out our latest New Zealand packages.
