When Kiwi skier Nico Porteous received a call from Matchstick Productions last February to pack his bags and get ready to fly from Europe to Japan with two-day’s notice he was psyched. The destination was Myoko which had been in a huge storm cycle since mid-December and another big storm was due to hit on Feb 17th and with one metre in the forecast the goal was to film a deep powder segment for Matchstick’s 2025 film release.

Nico is a two-time Olympian, the 24-year-old winning ski halfpipe bronze in PyeongChang in 2018 and then taking the gold medal at the Beijing Winter Olympics in 2022. Nico has been training and competing since he was six years old, but he decided to sit out the 2025 comp season to focus on freeskiing and filming. After 10 days of deep powder in Myoko, it looks like it was a good call.

From Nico

“After a last-minute call from MSP Productions, I packed up and headed to Japan to chase a massive 10-day storm in Myoko. This video is a visual diary of those 10 days. With 30cm top-ups every night and plenty of amazing food, this trip was one for the books.”
