In 48 hours Australia’s snow situation has gone from hmmm to Whoohoo with upwards of 50cm of new snow falling in NSW and between 20cm and 40cm hitting the Victorian resorts since Sunday morning.

72 hour snowfall:

Perisher: 58cm

Thredbo: 60cm

Charlotte Pass: 55cm

Selwyn Snowfields: 55cm

Mt Buller: 24cm

Hotham: 36cm

Falls Creek: 47cm

Mt Baw Baw: 26cm

“This is it – the day of the year after,” Mountainwatch.com’s Thredbo snow reporter Reggae Elliss said this morning in his snow report. Thredbo has recorded the highest 24 hour and 72 hour snowfall.

“Yesterday afternoon was special – this morning is going to be better. There will be plenty of fresh tracks to be had today with a lots more terrain open and they will continue to open more as ski patrol get out there and check things out.”

While excellent snowmaking has ensured the resorts’ beginner and intermediate areas have been pristine this year, the advanced skiers have had little to play on, with not enough natural snow falling in July to cover the off piste and backcountry areas.

But with snow forecast until Thursday, this could spell the start of an epic August. Fingers crossed!
