Avalanches and Bombs in Cali

March 15th, 2010

With Clint Allan at Mammoth Mtn California.

It was just pointed out to me by Transfers’ editor Holty that I should be throwing hammers not bombs. But a few days ago Mammoth Mountain let our filming crew up the main gondola at like 6.30 in the morning after a big dump with the idea that we could do some shredding and filming before the masses assembled in the lift lines.

Unfortunately the snow pack wasn’t really on our side and after a little time and one ski patrol member being ripped down 1300 vertical feet in an avalanche we realised that avalanche control was going to take a lot longer than expected, so we ditched the boards and cruised out with BOB (ski patrol) and tossed some bombs of the top of the mountain.

Early morning look at the top of the mountain – the original goal until it all slid out on us.

Our crew; Gabe, Trevor and myself treading lightly on the peak 7am.

Bob dropping bombs. Apparently its highly illegal for people who aren’t ski patrol to throw those things so for a few blasts we had to point the cameras at the ground.. ha ha.

What would have been an amazing chute to snowboard down until this thing went off with the aid of a bomb and carried half the mountain down with it.

A little jump we tried to milk after getting shut down up the top.

Still a super fun day riding. It’s always fun when the snow is like this.
