Cody Townsend’s The Fifty+ -The Super C, A Giant Couloir in South America
Mountainwatch | Video
In this episode of Cody Townsend’s new series, The Fifty +, he is in Portillo, Chile where Cody and wife Elise Saugstad join legendary skiers Chis Davenport and Mike Douglas – who also films this episode – to ski a couloir known as the Super C.
Is it a line that deserves to be classed as a classic? Well, on stats alone it is impressive – a 44 to-50-degree entrance and a leg-burning vertical of 1524 metres. And the best part for many may be the couloir’s ease of access as it is only a short hike from the ski area.
This episode is a little different to what we usually see from Cody as the first half is a bit if a travelogue. Given it is the first episode filmed outside North America that works well, Cody giving viewers the rundown on Portillio, its terrain, the snow and the famous Hotel Portillo, known as the “cruise ship in the sky.”
As for whether the Super C is a classic, Chris Davenport said, “for me it checks every box. It’s got the aesthetics, it’s got the steepness, the length, it faces the right direction. And it doesn’t give itself up easily you’ve got to climb, the views are amazing and it holds incredible snow ….” Watch the film and see if you agree.
