Freeride World Tour Safety Tips Video Series: Episode Two – Recognise Avalanche Risks

March 8th, 2022

Mountainwatch | Videos

This second episode of the Freeride World Tour safety tips series dives into how to recognise avalanche risks in the backcountry and mitigate risk.

While steep terrain and an unstable snowpack result in many avalanches they also occur in what can look like pretty mellow terrain. One of the basics of freeriding is watching for the natural signs of any potential danger and how to recognise them.

A clip of Xavier De Le Rue at the end of the episode shows that even the best and most experienced can make a critical mistake. There is no replacement for regular training and practice when it comes to mountain safety. If you’re into freeriding or want to explore the backcountry, educate yourself by undertaking a recognised avalanche safety course.
