The Travelplan Ski Northern Division Interschools Snowsports Championships wrapped up in Thredbo on Saturday with Pymble Ladies College (girls) and The Kings School (boys) announced as overall champion secondary schools and Toni Hodkinson from Pymble Ladies College proving herself faster than all the boys in alpine.

Newport Public School dominated the primary schools divisions in both the boys and the girls, with particularly strong performances in the snowboarding, placing 1st and 2nd in Division 4 boys snowboard GS and snowboard cross and 1st in the division 5 girls snowboard GS and snowboard cross.

In the division 5 snowboard GS, Newport Public School students Francesca Elder, Lucy Neill and Madison Hoffman swept the podium, placing 1st, 2nd and 3rd individually and winning the division as a team.

Division 1 individual girls champion Toni Hodkinson, who was more than one second faster than her division 1 boys counterpart Alex Sharpe of the Kings School, said beating all the boys was “pretty cool.” She felt “the race went really well” and is looking forward to the State Championships, where there will be more competition.

The Central Coast Grammar School’s Sarah Melville, an Australian Development Mogul Team member, was the other standout performer of the event. She competed in the boys’ competition and placed second overall, to fellow Australian Development Mogul Team and Central Coast Grammar School team member Matthew Graham.

The Kings School took out 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the division two ski cross and alpine

“The race was pretty good,” said Caption of the victorious Kings School Team Alex Webb. “I had a lot of fun, I think the boys did really well, I’m very proud of them, a big thanks to our coaches Jono, Craig, Sami and Will,” he said.

The event coordinators were relieved the weather was mostly fine for the four day event, though strong afternoon winds on Saturday had many of the division 1 alpine competitors shivering as they waiting for their runs.

The top five placed teams in each event, will progress to the State Championships, where they will meet the best of the teams from the Sydney and Southern NSW/ ACT regions. Any competitors who placed in the top 10 on individual times but whose team are not in the top five will also progress.

The Travelplan Ski Sydney Championships will be held 14 – 17 July at Perisher. See the 2010 Interschools events calendar here
