An investigation is underway after a chair on Thredbo’s Kosciuszko Express chairlift fell to the ground yesterday afternoon as it approached the top station.

Three people were on the chair at the time and were treated by ski patrol before being transferred to the resort medical centre where their injuries were assessed.

NSW Ambulance Service said two women in their 20s had suspected back injuries while a man also in his 20s had facial injuries.  The two women were airlifted to Canberra Hospital by helicopter while the man was taken to Cooma for medical treatment. The extent of the injuries has not been released.

The incident happened at around 2.20pm and the BOM weather station measured the winds between 2pm and 2.30pm were moderate WNW at 37-46km/hr, gusting to 65ks. Thredbo released a statement yesterday which said that the accident was caused by a freak gust of wind.

In its statement Thredbo said it, “is committed to the safety of our guests and our people. The incident is currently being thoroughly investigated by SafeWork NSW and an independent engineer.”
