Between 20cm and 30cm of snow is forecast for the Australian snow resorts on Sunday, kicking off August with a very welcome fresh snowfall.

Mt Buller is leading the charge with an expected 32cm, 25cm is forecast at Thredbo and 26cm at Falls Creek, only the third large snowfall of the 2010 season.

As July draws to a close, the Australian resorts are in need of a fall of natural in order to open the non snowmaking areas. A record season of snowmaking means the resorts are sporting excellent coverage on the snowmaking runs but the areas not covered by snowmaking – the more advanced terrain and off piste areas – haven’t opened yet, meaning most resorts have only about 30 per cent of trails open.

Mountainwatch.com’s alpine meteorologist Aaron Cook has forecast the snow for August, predicting higher than average precipitation for the Australian resorts, how much of that will fall as snow is still unclear

The snow is expected to arrive on Saturday, falling to around 2000m, but the freezing level will drop swiftly, meaning most of the resorts can expect top to bottom snowfall.

Fingers crossed this will be just the start of a big snowfall month!
