The Future Is Now – Ben Fawcett

July 10th, 2011

Transfer Snowboard Magazine | Alex Cameron

Ben Fawcett is the snowboarder that most people expect to be, but never quite become. He progresses steadily, adding new tricks to his list with unswerving consistency. He rides smart, sessioning a feature to build up momentum before trying something technical. He is calculated and knows his limits, which means that he almost never falls. And his style is that classic mixture of relaxation and commitment.

Classic style in black and white.

Ben is a guy who is so hard on his riding that he doesn’t realise how good he is. When he sees this feature I bet he is going think ‘I don’t deserve this, I don’t think I am ready’, but anyone who has seen him shred knows he was ready years ago. Next time you see him do a perfect 5 and shake his head, give him a high 5 to let him know it was sick. When Ben was a grommet, he told me he wasn’t going near the park till he had done two full seasons riding the hill to actually learn how to snowboard, and he did just that. He’s an old soul from a pure era of snowboarding even though he’s in the energy drink era.

Who or what inspires you and why?
My friends and family. I get by with a little help from my friends. This means the friends I have who are good at snowboarding or just good at living life.

Where will you be in five years?
I don’t know.

What fills your time apart from snowboarding?
Skateboarding, working, reading, watching videos and sadly facebook.

Describe your ideal day.
A powder day riding with friends followed by good food.

How do you find working with Charles (Beckinsale) and the rest of the Thredbo Terrain Park Crew?
I feel fortunate to get to work with some of my buddies. The times when we get to ride are the best for me.

You stayed over in Whistler really late this year, how is it over there in spring?
Really fun, more snowboarding and the party’s have been good.

What’s your plan for the upcoming winter down under?
A lot of boardin.

Ben spent the summer in Whistler snowboarding and hanging out with a large Aussie contingent. When he had a spare moment, he did a bit of filming too.
