When the World Heli Challenge was resurrected in 2009 after an eight year hiatus, kiwi shredder Quentin Robbins was all over it. The bad weather that had kept the heli grounded for the first few days cleared for three consecutive bluebirds, giving Q and the other ‘heli challengers’ their chance to throw it down.

Claiming victory on day one in the freestyle event, Q finished 2nd overall, giving him free entry into this year’s WHC.
With a solid two decades of snowboarding under his belt, this kiwi legend shows no signs of slowing down any time soon.

What motivated you to sign up for the WHC?
I never got to do it back in the day, so when I heard it was coming back I jumped on the opportunity.

When you first signed up for the WHC what did you expect and how did your expectations measure up to the reality?
I was expecting some fun rides in the heli, some fun rides down the hill and some fun parties, it was all that and then some.

How do you prepare for an event like this?
By going snowboarding… A lot! You want to be ready, the legs need to be good and strong. I also swim a fair bit. A little bit of wax and a whole lot of beer.

Of the three events from previous years; downhill race, big mountain, and freestyle, which is your favourite and why?
Big mountain because it’s sick man!

Are there any special techniques you use to give yourself an advantage in this event?
After drinking too much I take those Russian carbon tablets.

What are your goals as your gear up for this years WHC?
Ride shotgun with Harvey, and catch a big ass fish. (Harvey is the heli pilot, who will take you on the ride of your life!)

Have you ever been to any other events similar to this?
Nope.

Do you still get a buzz when you get in a heli?
Hell yeah, I love heli’s. It never gets boring.

When did you do your first ever heli board?
About 15 years ago, I think maybe 1995 around Wanaka somewhere.

What’s the best thing about the World Heli Challenge?
The posse.

Looking back at last year’s WHC (2009), what were some of the highlights for you?
Rydor, Matt and Drew on stage at the hotel! Awesome – the Eagles cover band ripped it up and arriving at the big mountain location was very memorable!

What do you see in the future for the WHC?
Lots of good things.

Weather has a major role to play in this event. What’s your favourite activity on a bad weather wait day at WHC?
A little bit of jet boating up the river, few brews, catch some fish, then cook ’em up for dinner.

Is there anything you would like to add?
Mr Tony Harrington is a legend.
