Mountainwatch | World Snow Wrap

We may now be in early Spring, but it seems Ullr is stuck firmly in the groove of Winter; at least for a little while longer. The western states of North America have been getting puked on since last week, with the most significant snowfall hitting California, Utah and Colorado. Over in Europe it’s been snowing hard in the Alps, read on for more…

Canada

The latest snow events that have brought pow to the south have only donated a dusting of new snow in Whistler Blackcomb, meaning that spring conditions and bluebird skies persist. Unfortunately Whistler Blackcomb hasn’t received significant snowfall since February 10. We’ve even heard mention of the fact that this may have been the worst season in the PNW for 100 years. Up in the B.C interior things aren’t quite so dire, Revelstoke is sitting on a 199cm base with 8cm of new snow and Big White copped a 5cm dusting on Tuesday. As you’d expect, the East Coast resorts in Quebec are benefitting from the extremely cold weather that’s been affecting the region. East Coast resorts are expecting 20cm of new snow this week.

USA

After quite a long wait, California’s luck seems to have finally changed. Mammoth and Squaw have both received close to 35cm of new snow causing a dramatic improvement in conditions there. The biggest falls hit Colorado, with 40-50cm hitting Aspen and Telluride and surrounding resorts. The snow hit early last week and has been persisting for close to seven days. To the north, Jackson Hole has received 30cm of new snow over the last few days and with blue sky in the forecast this week is shaping up to be one of the best of the season.

St Anton has to be one of the world’s most magnificent places to ski. No doubt spring will be delivering plenty of days like today Image:: St Anton

Europe

Most of the Alps are being battered by a storm right now that looks set to deliver some incredible skiing. France looks to be leading the charge with 20cm falling over the last day or so. The freezing level has been sitting around about 1800m so it’s mid-mountain to the peaks where you’ll find the best skiing. The freezing levels are expected to drop over the next few days as another 20cm or so moves in. Head high when possible. The story is much the same across Switzerland and Italy. Keep in mind that as we move further into spring the temps will fluctuate considerably, having a noticeable affect on the snowpack throughout the day.

Summary

Now that we’re approaching spring it’s going to be blue sky spring skiing and touring that will keep people occupied. Enjoy the snow while it lasts.

Where We Would Like To Be This Week

Well after a long wait it’s California that seems to be the pick of the moment. We’d love to be exploring the steeps of Squaw Valley Resort.
