For backcountry skiers the potential for avalanches is real and, as backcountry riding becomes more popular, something everyone should be aware of, regardless how benign the conditions may seem. Understanding the snowpack goes so far, but in many regions avalanche forecasts are an essential tool to decide whether to go or not

In this “bonus episode” of Cody Townsend’s The Fifty + series, Cody talks to Andy Anderson, director of the Sierra Avalanche Centre in Truckee, near lake Tahoe. It’s an interesting look at the science involved and how the centre relates that information to backcountry skiers.
