Australian Weekend Forecast, Friday, September 5th – Nice Friday & Saturday, But Wet & Windy From Sunday, Snow From Late Tuesday

Mountainwatch | The Grasshopper
We’ve had a couple of windy ones that affected some lift operations, but high-level snow showers on Wednesday crept down on Thursday, eventually reaching low elevations. About 10cm has accumulated on Perisher’s snow stake, but Reggae and the crew will have all the final numbers in their morning reports.
The fresh stash of snow will set us up nicely for a couple of fine-weather days as high pressure drifts over the Aussie Alps Friday and Saturday. The weather turns nasty on Sunday as an approaching front cranks up those dreaded hairdryer northwesters, with rain spreading eastwards through the latter half of the day. We could see a few more rain showers on Monday, and then more rain on Tuesday, before a cold change late in the day likely brings a top-up of powder.

Friday 5th September
A nice, sunny day as a high drifts over the Aussie Alps. Cold southerly winds die away.
Saturday 6th September
Another fine day, with a little high cloud and northwest winds.
Sunday 7th September
Clouds build and hairdryer northwesterlies strengthen as a front approaches from the west, reaching severe-gale in exposed places. The front spreads rain eastwards over Victoria during the afternoon and New South Wales in the evening with heavy falls on the cards.
Monday 8th September
Partly sunny, partly cloudy with strong-to-gale force northwest winds. We could see a few rain showers too.
Tuesday 9th September
Rain becomes widespread early as another front approaches from the west, with strong-to -gale force northwest winds again. The front goes through late in the piece, bringing a cold southwest change and snowfall to low levels. A top-up is expected, although there’s a lot of uncertainty around the timing and amount of it.
Extended Forecast
Things remain uncertain in the extended period, but cold winds are expected to keep snow falling through Wednesday, and possibly Thursday and Friday, although I wouldn’t count on that. As a result, snowfall amounts vary wildly. However, there’s a good chance high pressure will bring settled conditions for next weekend.
That’s all from me today, folks. I’m sending out these forecasts every Monday, Wednesday and Friday throughout the season. Have a great weekend, and I’ll see you back here on Monday.
