It has been a big couple of weeks in parts of the US with consistent snowfalls across some resorts turning on a run of sensational powder days. In Utah the snow totals are ridiculous, Snowbird has a 10-day total of 216cms while Alta is reporting just under 289cms in 11 days.

Of course, that much snow also brings its own set of problems, and not just high avalanche danger, Alta describing last weekend’s storm as “a storm cycle that delivered plenty of snow, wind, downed trees, buried cars, avalanches, a 34-hour inter-lodge and a few cases of powder fever”.

Other resorts to clock in some big totals include Steamboat which is boasting 11 consecutive snow days since Jan 5th and 223cms this month. Last week’s storm also delivered for other Colorado resorts with a five-day total of 116cms in Crested Butte while Aspen and Vail have had 91cms the past week.  Jackson Hole, where snow pack at the end of December was the lowest it had been since 1974 has also received 132cms over the past nine days.

Big snowfalls also hit the Pacific Northwest last week with Stevens Pass getting hammered with 90cms in three days while in the Sierras, Palisades Tahoe has seen 96cms in the past week although there was rain at lower elevations yesterday. Further south Mammoth has picked up 66cm in the past week, including 17cms last night.

Stay tuned for the Grasshopper’s weekly North American forecast tomorrow to see what the next week will bring. Also check out his latest North American outlook to get an idea of what the second half of the season may bring.

In the mean time those photos, shot at various resort over the past 10 days, could cause a sever case of snow envy.
