Australian Forecast – Beanies & Jackets Now Required as Winter Starts to Stir Again

Published early Wednesday, 22nd July 2026

The days of t-shirt runs and goggle tans have come to a close as we now enter a period of fairly weak storm activity. Low humidity over the last several days has allowed resorts to bolster their piste runs, even though overnight temperatures often remained in the positives. The only exception to this is Mt Baw Baw and Buller, where there has been no mention of snow making recently.

Over the next few days, a storm system sliding underneath us brings a little snow up high on Wednesday, followed by a weak cold change and light snowfall on Thursday into Friday. Resorts will get a dusting of around 2-5cm to low levels, and cold temps will see the snow guns get a good hard run in. We’ll see more snow showers on Saturday, before things clear up on Sunday, but it’ll be a little warmer so it’ll be wet and damp about the lower terrain.

Wednesday 22nd July

Mostly cloudy with brisk northwest winds. Occasional drizzle and light rain develop in the morning, falling as snow to around 1800m.

Thursday 23rd July

Colder west-to-southwest winds arrive before breaky time, bringing occasional light snow showers and flurries below base levels. Resorts should pick up a fresh dusting of 1-3cm, and the snow guns will get a good run.

Friday 24th July

A mostly cloudy day, especially in Victoria, where snow flurries continue with another 1-2cm possibly accumulating. New South Wales may also see a snow flurry or two if we’re lucky. Cold west to-southwesterlies, which should have the snow guns blazing again.

Saturday 25th July

Another grey cloudy day with brisk westerly winds. Light snow showers spread over Victoria during the morning then New South Wales in the afternoon, but it’ll likely be wet and sleety about the lower slopes as snow levels will sit a bit higher. The showers will be most persistent about Mt Baw Baw and Buller as they’ll be in the firing line with a damp day lined up.

Sunday 26th July

Clouds break up in the morning for a sunny afternoon while southwest winds die away.

Extended Forecast

Models have backed off a touch on a cold storm system crossing early next week, but we’re still in line to score a decent top-up of around 10-20cm from late Monday the 27th to Wednesday the 29th.

Cold temperatures may persist through the latter half of next week, which would give the snow guns another good long run, and we could also see some additional snow showers if we’re lucky. If this forecast holds, we’ll see a good jump in conditions as we cross over the mid-point of the season.

That’s all from me today, folks. I’m firing out these forecasts every Monday, Wednesday and Friday throughout the season, and an extra update on Sundays during peak season. Have a great couple of days, and I’ll see you back here on Friday.
