For the last two decades, there’s been a war waged between ski resort development company and proponent, Glacier Resorts Ltd – who are attempting to construct a massive year-round ski resort in the British Columbian Purcell Range – and local stakeholders who fear that the Jumbo Glacier Resort project risks destroying one of the most pristine and truly wild landscapes in the province of British Columbia.

This kind of issue raises difficult considerations that penetrate to the core ethos of our sport. As skiers we rely on resort infrastructure as we learn and progress. But at the same time those who become passionate enough to access backcountry ski areas like Jumbo Glacier also wish to protect the true wilderness and solitude that these places provide, in order to continue to enjoy them.

The approval for Jumbo Glacier resort has been waged through an unprecedented 23-year approval battle in the Canadian courts, and it remains held up by stringent environmental restrictions and further red tape.

In the meantime, environmentally minded outdoor brand, Patagonia engaged the visual services of renowned filmmakers Sweetgrass Productions to attempt to explore both sides of the issue through an hour-long documentary. The upcoming release promises to deconstruct both arguments for and against the project, as well as delivering some epic ski footage in the process. This is an upcoming release we will be eagerly anticipating.
