June 23rd, 2009

Jindabyne’s Russell Henshaw’s international reputation has grown dramatically over the last two years and, after his performance in this year’s Jon Olsson Super Sessions , he is regarded as one of the best new school free skiers in the world.

The Super Sessions is a film and photo contest and an invite only event featuring seven international teams made up of two skiers, two filmers and a photographer. Each team made a film over two weeks in Trysil, Norway and Are, Sweden, with the best film and best photo categories awarded at a huge closing party in Are. Team Downunder consisted of skiers Russell and Wanaka’s Jossi Wells, Rob Norman and Kris Ostness as the filmers and Chillfactor’s Tony Harrington Tony Harrington the photographer.

The athletes had to produce six tricks to be included in the five-minute movie and the overall performance was judged on these tricks. There were also two Big Air events, the first in Trysil where Russ finished second. The following week the grand finale Big Air, the Jon Olsson Invitational, was held in Are, with some of the sport’s biggest names competing. Every big name skier in the sport competed, including X Game Gold Medalists and European Open Champions, Russ, who took first place.

Russ also took out the “Best Performer” Award of the overall event, a staggering effort considering the talent featured the best international free skiers, including current X Games Gold medalists Simon Dumont and TJ Schiller.
