Detailed Forecast

Australian Forecast – Low From the North to Bring a Fresh Load of Powder Midweek

Published early Monday, 8th September 2025

After a couple of beaut days with sunshine and a little fresh snow, warm northwest winds got going on Sunday, softening the snowpack to sugar, and we’ve copped some heavy rain and thunderstorms Sunday night.

The last of the rain showers will clear today, Monday, but northwest winds won’t start easing till Tuesday. On Wednesday, rain develops and then turns to snow as a low-pressure system passes by just to the north of the Aussie Alps, pushing in cold winds from the south. Heavy snowfall is on the cards before it eases on Thursday, leaving between 10 and 20cm, but up to 30cm is possible about the tops. Friday will be a great day to hit that fresh load of powder, as building pressure brings fine weather and easing winds.

Monday 8th September

Rain showers clear Victoria from the west early morning, then New South Wales by early afternoon, leaving partly cloudy skies. Strong-to-gale force northwest winds.

Tuesday 9th September

It’ll be a partly sunny and cloudy day as strong west-to-northwest winds abate.

Wednesday 10th September

A low-pressure system approaching from the north spreads rain and high-level snow down over the Aussie Alps. Snow levels gradually lower to base levels throughout the second half of the day as cold southeast winds pick up, with heavy snowfalls on the cards.

Thursday 11th September

Snow to low levels clears in the morning, leaving partly cloudy skies as cold, brisk southerly winds back off. It’ll be a great day to head up, so clear your schedule!

Friday 12th September

Another great day to hit the slopes with mostly sunny skies. However, there’ll be more cloud in western Victoria where southwest winds will be a bit stronger.

Extended Forecast

It’ll be a nice day on Saturday as high pressure passes to the north, and then northwest winds will pick up on Sunday. There’s a good chance a passing storm system early next week will initially bring a period of strong northwest winds and rain, followed by a cold change and a little snow. Models also hint at another snow-bearing storm system towards the end of the week.

That’s all from me today, folks. I’m sending out these forecasts every Monday, Wednesday and Friday throughout the season. Have a great couple of days, and I’ll see you back here on Wednesday.
