South Island Detailed Forecast

The Mountainwatch Detailed Forecast is provided by our resident meteorology sensei "The Grasshopper". The South Island analysis is issued around 7am every morning (maybe later on weekends) and is intended to provide an additional human element to the automated forecast data provided above. Sometimes we won't agree exactly with the model data - but if we ever call something significantly different we'll do our best to explain why.

7:00am Monday 25 September

Conditions Summary:
Just a bit of cloud around, and some westerly breezes. Mild temps above zero.

Synoptic Outlook:
I think the word we are looking for is “unsettled”. My advice, go up the mountain prepared for a bit of everything and the weather will not disappoint you this week! Three fronts/lows are lined up for the week and with freezing levels hovering mid-mountain, we are going to see a mixture of sunshine and rain/snow showers.

The first front crosses Otago this morning, and Canterbury this afternoon. Although most of the rain stays west of the divide we will see a few showers get across to the ski fields, falling as snow to about 1600m. Another front arrives tomorrow, pushing a few more showers over Otago, falling as snow down to 1100m, and Canterbury down to 1600m.

Wednesday and Thursday a mixture of sunshine and showers for Otago, but a risk for winds to turn easterly in Canterbury and bring in cloud and misty conditions with some showers too.

Monday 25 September:
A few showers, snow down to 1600m.

Tuesday 26 September:
A few showers, snow down to 1100m in Otago, 1600m in Canterbury.

Wednesday 27 September:
A few showers of rain/snow mix for Otago. Easterlies bring cloud and showers to Canterbury.

Thursday 28 September:
Partly cloudy, a few spots of rain/snow mix for Otago.

Extended Outlook:
The next low pressure barrels over us on Friday, dropping another dose of rain. After that, the front invasion continues, but these next ones look a little cooler and possibly snowier especially for Otago.
