Australian Interschools SnowSports Championships Wrap Up
Was it the best Australian Interschools SnowSports Championships ever? If you asked many of the participants (and the organisers) they would say it was.
The third Australian titles hosted by Falls Creek were concluded on Sunday with the hotly contested alpine events. At the NSW state titles the school-aged skiers didn’t get to compete in the popular GS races which determine the overall winners in the annual Australian Interschools SnowSports Championships.
Arch rivals Sydney-based Scots College and Melbourne-based Melbourne Grammar both knew it would go down to the wire. At the final presentation in the Village Bowl on Sunday afternoon you could feel the anticipation amongst the friendly rivals.
Reigning champions Scots College retained their title with a narrow three point win over arch rival Melbourne Grammar. Scotch College was third with 58 points.
Andy Kovari the Master in Charge of Skiing at Scots said:”It is incredible that we finished first two years in a row. The boys performed well throughout the well run championships.”
Champion Girls Secondary School was First place MLC, Victoria, with 105 points, second Ascham School for Girls, Sydney, with 55 points and third place was Melbourne Girls Grammar with 52 points.
The winning school in the Co-Ed Secondary School Division was Snowy Mountains Grammar (181 points), second Redlands (150 points) and third Geelong Grammar (63 points).
With podium places being evenly spread amongst a number of schools quite a number of the 2,000-plus competitors went home with a gold, silver or bronze medals.
In fact the local Falls Creek Primary School achieved results well above modest expectations.
Lily Newton-Brown is now the Australian Champion skier in the Division 4 Girls Moguls. Zoe Scott (also from Falls Creek Primary School) topped the Division 5 Girls Moguls and her team was awarded first place in the Division 5 Girls Moguls.
The Division 4 Girls mogul team representing Falls Creek Primary School just pipped Jindabyne Central School for first place in the team results.
Good results for the Falls Creek Primary School continued in the Skier Cross with Lily Newtown-Brown taking out first in her division and Kendra Etherton did likewise in the very competitive Division 5 Girls Skier Cross
In what was a mini ‘Winter Olympics’ all the 2,000-plus entrants in about seventy separate events were the winners. Plus the hundreds of parents, coaches and teachers who volunteer to ensure this annual competition delivers the desired outcome.
Falls Creek’s Events & Race Department team works with the Osborne family members to ensure all events are held on well prepared courses throughout the event.
This year mother nature delivered much better than expected weather which elevated the event’s stature way above past Subaru-sponsored Australian Interschool SnowSports Championships.
