Hotham has more: More terrain, steeper runs, more snow, more beds and great nightlife. With 13 lifts, an Extreme Zone to keep keen riders humble, and more varied terrain than any other Australian resort, Hotham holds plenty of appeal for any adventure-seeking skier. All resorts aren’t created equal, so here’s a few reasons to check out Mt Hotham this season.

1. More Terrain

Hotham’s design takes advantage of the natural ridge lines that run off its peak, providing some of the most unique riding in Australia. If you’re craving a long run, try Spargo’s, the longest on the mountain. Get ready though, it lasts for a seemingly endless 2.5 km, so you’ll really feel those quads burning!

Hotham’s extreme zone sits out past Heavenly Valley, and is a skiers’ and boarders’ paradise on powder days. In this zone you’ll find Mary’s Slide, which will keep riders honest. Mary’s Slide is ranked as the greatest in-bounds run in Australia, boasting a shockingly steep pitch, ever-changing snow conditions and a super challenging ski-out through the trees and over Swindler’s bridge. Take on the challenge though, as Mary’s Slide is unbeatable on a powder day and a formidable accomplishment.

2. The HothamBus Service

Often the excitement you have for your ski trip drains away when your wallet is empty after paying for fuel, chain hire and all the rest; and what if the car’s heater can’t cope with mountain temperatures? Worse still, you could be left standing in the icy wind, with frozen hands clutching at a lump of chains so old and tangled it takes you an hour to fit them to the wheels. Luckily, The HothamBus connects Adelaide, Sydney, Albury and Melbourne with Mount Hotham for a safe, fuss-free ride from city to mountain. Your gear is stowed underneath while you sit in the toasty warmth until you’re dropped at your accommodation. You’ll save hundreds of dollars over the season on fuel, plus you can rely on the expertly-trained bus drivers who know the slippery roads like the back of their hands.

3. Quality Accommodation

There are over 7,000 beds to choose from between Hotham and Dinner Plains Village. For luxury accommodation and a true on-mountain alpine experience, stay at the Absollut Apartments. A cosy gas fireplace, beautifully furnished interior and spa bath and a handy drying room for wet gear makes the handful of Absollut Apartments well worth the extra dollars. If you’re planning on making a few trips to Hotham this winter, you can’t go past a lodge membership for value. The Anton Guette Lodge is just one of the many great lodges that offer affordable rates for their members. If you don’t have your own gear, it’s worth looking at accommodation, lift ticket and gear hire packages to make the whole trip a bit more affordable.

4. On-Mountain Supermarkets make your trip cheaper

Hotham’s four supermarkets make your ski trip more affordable so you can stay and ski for longer. Unlike other resorts who stock only the bare minimum making it impossible for you to cook a decent meal, Hotham offers real groceries at reasonable prices. Instead of packing groceries from home, travel light and order them online, ahead of time, from the Hotham Central Supermarket. This supermarket has everything you’ll need for your trip, and delivers your goodies just before you arrive in case you’re hungry from the journey. By cooking for a few nights, you’ll save some cash, helping you stay longer and ski further.

5. Exciting nightlife for all ages

Genuinely good nightlife is at the heart of a Hotham ski trip. Experience the Aussie version of aprés ski at Swindler’s bar where you can catch any football games you might be missing while you’re away. For a big night out, you can’t go past The General. Don’t miss Trivia Night Tuesdays, and local live bands throughout August when Aussie Music Month hits The General. The Bird is a relaxed venue that recently started offering live music through The Bird Song Sessions. Don’t miss their affordable meals like the Taco duo and a craft beer for $14 on Tuesdays. No matter your tastes, Hotham has an entertainment venue to make your nights just as fun as your days on the hill.
